The Mars M91411 is a contactor rated 40 amps with a one and a half pole configuration and a 24 volt coil.

The one and a half pole arrangement is a genuine design rather than a catalogue oddity, and it addresses a specific requirement in air conditioning equipment. One pole switches fully, while the second position provides a shunted or partial arrangement that maintains a connection for an auxiliary circuit even when the contactor is open.

The usual purpose is the crankcase heater. A compressor crankcase heater must remain energised when the compressor is off, since its function is to keep refrigerant from migrating into and condensing in the compressor oil during the off cycle. Refrigerant dissolved in the oil reduces its lubricating capacity, and on the next start the resulting foaming can wash the bearings and, in severe cases, cause slugging.

A conventional two pole contactor would interrupt the heater along with the compressor, defeating its purpose. The one and a half pole arrangement keeps the heater circuit alive while the compressor is off and is a common original equipment configuration for that reason.

Replacing a one and a half pole contactor with a conventional two pole unit will disable the crankcase heater, so the configuration must be matched.

Applications include residential and light commercial air conditioning and heat pump equipment.
