The Magnaflux MGX25901 is Ultragel II high performance ultrasonic couplant, 1 gallon cubitainer, bright blue, transparent gel, mild detergent odour, relative density 1.05, pH 7.3 to 8.3.

Couplant exists because of a physical fact that makes ultrasonic testing impossible without it: air is very nearly a perfect barrier to ultrasound. The acoustic impedance mismatch between a steel transducer face and air is so extreme that essentially all the energy reflects at the interface. Hold a transducer against dry steel and almost nothing enters the part.

A couplant fills the microscopic gap between transducer and surface with a liquid whose impedance is close enough to let the sound cross. That is the whole job — it is not a lubricant and not an aid. Without it there is no test.

The pH range of 7.3 to 8.3 is the specification worth reading, and it is not a footnote. A couplant sits on a part for the duration of an inspection and is often incompletely removed afterward. An acidic or strongly alkaline gel left on steel or aluminium starts corroding it, which means the inspection damages the thing it certified. Near-neutral pH is what stops that.

Bright blue makes it visible on the part, so it can be seen and removed.

Applications include ultrasonic thickness testing, weld inspection, and in-service inspection.
