Dye penetrant inspection finds cracks by capillary action, and the sequence is worth knowing because every step matters. Clean the surface. Apply penetrant and let it dwell — capillary action draws it into anything open to the surface. Remove the excess from the surface without pulling it out of the flaw. Apply developer, which blots the trapped penetrant back out and spreads it laterally, so a crack too fine to see becomes a visible line many times its actual width.

The critical limitation, and it is absolute: penetrant only finds flaws that are open to the surface. If it is not open, penetrant cannot get in, and the method reports nothing. Subsurface flaws need ultrasonics or radiography.

Solvent removable is the specification. The excess penetrant is wiped away with a solvent cleaner rather than washed with water. That makes it the method for field work, large structures, and anywhere there is no water supply or drain — and it is the method most likely to be misused, because over-cleaning the surface pulls penetrant out of the flaw and the crack disappears.

The unique advantage of penetrant over magnetic particle: it works on any non-porous material, including aluminium and austenitic stainless.
