The Magnaflux MGX01-5352-78 is SKD-S2 developer, solvent based, 16 oz aerosol, white, alcohol odour, neutral pH, flammable, VOC content 456.06 g/l.

The developer is the step that makes penetrant inspection work, and it is the least understood part of the process.

After penetrant has dwelled in a crack and the surface excess has been removed, there is red dye sitting in a flaw far too fine to see. The developer does two things at once. It is a fine white powder that provides a uniform background — the contrast the eye needs. And it acts as a blotter: capillary action pulls the trapped penetrant back out of the flaw and spreads it sideways into the powder layer, so a crack a few microns wide produces an indication many times wider. That amplification is what makes an invisible flaw visible.

Solvent based means the powder is carried in a volatile solvent that flashes off, leaving an even film. That gives the thinnest, most uniform coating of the developer types, which makes it the most sensitive — and it is why aerosol solvent developer is standard for field and weld inspection.

Film thickness controls the outcome. Too heavy and the developer buries fine indications; too light and there is no blotting.
