The gallon size identifies a different buyer from the aerosol. An aerosol lubricates a mechanism; a gallon dips, brushes, wipes, or feeds an applicator. Production lines, assembly operations, and shops treating quantities of parts buy the bulk container — and it is substantially cheaper per unit of product than aerosol, where a large fraction of the can is propellant.

Greaseless is the defining property and it is worth being precise about, because the name causes confusion. This does lubricate. What it does not do is leave grease behind. The product applies wet, the carrier evaporates, and a thin dry film remains.

That matters wherever an oily film would cause a problem rather than solve one. Locks foul with dust that oil holds. Precision mechanisms collect grit. Electrical contacts accumulate carbon. Parts that will be painted, bonded, or handled cannot carry an oil film.

The trade is that a dry film has a shorter life than an oil film and carries less load. LPS 2 is the heavy-duty oily product for exposed, loaded mechanisms.
