Loctite LOC231562 Degreaser Odc-Free Cleaner & Degreaser 15 oz can

The Loctite LOC231562 is an ODC-Free cleaner and degreaser designed for cleaning and degreasing surfaces to be bonded with adhesives, 15 oz can.

The stated purpose is the specification that matters: this is a preparation product for adhesive bonding, not a general parts cleaner, and the distinction is real.

Adhesive bonding fails on contamination more than on anything else. An adhesive can only bond to what it touches, and if what it touches is a film of oil, mould release, fingerprint, or machining fluid, then the adhesive is bonded to that film — which is itself bonded to nothing. The joint tests fine and fails in service, and the adhesive gets blamed.

A cleaner intended for bonding preparation has to do more than dissolve oil. It has to evaporate completely and leave no residue of its own, because a residue is simply a different contaminant. Many general degreasers leave a film by design — they are formulated to protect against flash rust — and that film ruins a bond.

ODC-free means free of ozone depleting compounds, which is a regulatory and environmental specification. Older solvent cleaners relied on chemistry that is now restricted.
