The Justrite JUS09110 is an oily waste can, 6 gallon, with a hand-operated cover, in red.

This is a fire prevention device and the hazard it addresses is one of the most underestimated in any workshop: oily rags catch fire on their own.

The mechanism is real chemistry, not folklore. Drying oils — linseed, tung, and many finishes and stains — cure by oxidising, and oxidation is exothermic. A rag laid flat loses that heat to the air. A pile of rags in a bin insulates itself, the heat accumulates, the reaction accelerates as it gets hotter, and eventually the pile reaches ignition temperature. Nobody struck a match. This is how furniture shops and body shops burn down overnight, hours after everyone went home.

An oily waste can interrupts it. The self-closing lid limits oxygen to the contents, the elevated base allows air circulation to carry heat away from the can, and the design contains a fire if one starts.

The hand-operated cover means the lid is opened by hand rather than a foot pedal — a foot-operated version exists for situations where both hands are full.

Red is the fire-safety colour convention.

Applications include woodworking and finishing, body shops, maintenance, and any operation using oils, stains, or solvents.

Empty the can daily. A safety can that is never emptied is just a bin.
