The Eagle EAG935FL is a safety oily waste can constructed from polyethylene with a foot lever, in red, with a 10 gallon capacity.

This can exists to prevent fires, and the mechanism it guards against surprises people who have not met it. Rags soaked in oil, solvent, stain, or linseed oil do not need an ignition source to burn. The oil oxidises, oxidation releases heat, and a pile of rags insulates that heat rather than shedding it. The temperature climbs on its own until the rags reach their ignition point and combust. This is spontaneous combustion, it is entirely real, and it has burned down a great many workshops overnight after everyone went home.

The safety can interrupts it. The lid is self-closing, held open by the foot lever and dropping shut when the foot is removed, so the can is closed by default rather than by discipline. A closed can starves the rags of the oxygen the oxidation reaction requires, and the elevated base allows air to circulate around the can so heat dissipates instead of accumulating.

The foot lever is what makes this work in practice. A technician with oily rags in both hands will not open a lidded can by hand; they will drop the rags beside it.

Polyethylene construction resists corrosion from solvents and oils.
