Safety plates — cover lenses — are the clear plates that sandwich the welding filter, and they are the most misunderstood consumable in welding. The filter itself is the expensive part, whether it is a passive shade lens or an auto-darkening cartridge. Spatter, sparks, and grinding debris would pit and destroy it in days.

The safety plates take that damage instead. One sits outside the filter and one inside, and both are sacrificial: they pit, they scratch, they get thrown away, and the filter behind them survives.

The economics are the whole argument. A cover plate costs a fraction of a filter and a small fraction of an ADF cartridge. Running without one, or running a pitted one until the welder cannot see, is how shops destroy filters and then wonder why their helmet costs are high.
