Jackson Safety JKS14531 Welding Helmet Huntsman Passive Black Leather 10

The Jackson Safety JKS14531 is a Huntsman passive welding helmet, black, with a leather helmet shell, 4-1/4 x 2 inch filter and viewing area, shade 10.

The leather shell is unusual and it is the whole reason this helmet exists. Almost every welding helmet is thermoplastic or fiberglass. Leather is specified for one situation: overhead welding, where sparks and molten metal fall directly onto the helmet. A thermoplastic shell degrades under that; leather takes it, and leather is also flexible, which lets the helmet conform in the confined positions overhead work puts a welder into.

That makes this a specialist tool rather than a general one. For bench welding, a thermoplastic hood is lighter and cheaper. For working under a structure with slag raining down, leather is what survives.

The 4-1/4 x 2 inch window is the compact size, which suits the same confined out-of-position work.

Passive means a fixed shade 10 filter — no battery, no electronics, nothing to fail. The trade is that the welder must position the hood before striking the arc, which for experienced welders is second nature.
