The HSL shell is Jackson's narrow design, built for confined spaces. It is slimmer than a conventional hood, which is what gets a welder into a vessel, between beams, or inside a rack where a standard helmet stops them. The cost is reduced spark coverage at the sides, making it a specialisation rather than an upgrade.

The window is what makes the HSL100 worth the money. A full-size viewing area on a narrow shell is an unusual combination — the narrow-shell alternatives in this range use a 4-1/4 x 2 inch letterbox that shows the puddle and little else. The HSL100 gives confined-space access without giving up sight of the joint.

Passive means a fixed shade 10 filter: no battery, nothing to fail.
