The Jackson Safety JKS14979 is an HSL1 passive welding helmet, black, with an HSL-1 shell, 4-1/4 x 2 inch filter and viewing area, shade 10.

The 4-1/4 x 2 inch window is the specification here and it is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation. This is the traditional narrow window — the letterbox — and pairing it with the HSL narrow shell produces the most compact welding helmet configuration Jackson makes.

Compactness is the whole point. A welder working inside a vessel, in a pipe rack, or between structural members is frequently stopped by their hood before anything else. Every inch of shell and window is an inch that has to fit through the opening. The small window also means a smaller, lighter shell overall, which matters across a shift spent nodding a hood down.

What you give up is field of view. A 4-1/4 x 2 inch window shows the puddle and not much else, so the welder repositions more to see the joint's context. For confined work that is an acceptable trade; for bench work it is not, and the large-window helmets in this range exist for that.

Passive means a fixed shade 10 filter — nothing to fail, no battery.
