The Jackson Safety JKS16622 is a NexGen ADF cartridge with filter dimensions of 4.50 x 5-1/4 inch, a 3.8 x 2.35 inch viewing area, shade range 4/9-13, approved to ANSI Z87.1 2010 and CSA Z94.3.

ADF means auto-darkening filter, and the shade range notation is the specification that matters. 4/9-13 reads as: shade 4 in the light state, variable from shade 9 to 13 when darkened. Shade 4 light state is what lets a welder see the joint, position the electrode, and work without lifting the hood. The 9 to 13 range covers everything from light TIG up to high-amperage stick and gouging — the darker shade goes with the higher current.

Getting the shade right is not a comfort question. Too light and the arc damages the eyes over time; too dark and the welder cannot see the puddle, which produces bad welds and a welder who leans in closer.

Note the difference between filter dimensions and viewing area: the cartridge is 4.50 x 5-1/4 inch, but the window you actually see through is 3.8 x 2.35 inch. The frame takes the rest. That distinction catches people out when comparing filters.

The ANSI Z87.1 and CSA Z94.3 approvals are the North American standards for eye and face protection.
