DiversiTech Definite Purpose Contactor C360C

The DiversiTech C360C is a three pole definite purpose contactor rated 60 amps with a 208/240 volt coil.

A useful distinction to keep clear is between a contactor, a relay, and a motor starter, since all three switch loads and the terms are used loosely.

A relay is generally a smaller device switching control circuits or light loads, often with multiple contact arrangements including normally closed contacts.

A contactor is built to switch substantial power loads, with contacts and arc handling suited to motor inrush, but it provides no overload protection. It closes when told and opens when told, regardless of what current is flowing.

A motor starter is a contactor combined with an overload relay sized to the motor it protects. The overload monitors current and opens the control circuit if the motor draws excessive current for too long, protecting the windings from a locked rotor, a lost phase, or a mechanical fault.

Where equipment relies on internal thermal protection, as most compressors do, a contactor is appropriate. Where a motor has no internal protection, a starter is required. Substituting one for the other on that basis is a genuine error rather than a preference.

Applications include commercial air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
