DiversiTech Definite Purpose Contactor C350B

The DiversiTech C350B is a three pole definite purpose contactor rated 50 amps with a 120 volt coil.

Contactors of this size generate a noticeable mechanical impact when they close, and on commercial equipment that impact is transmitted into the cabinet and, through it, into the building structure. In installations where the equipment adjoins occupied space, the audible thump of a large contactor closing is a recognised source of complaint, particularly in quiet buildings and at night.

Where this occurs, the remedies are physical rather than electrical: isolating the control panel from the structure, mounting the contactor on a resilient backing, or in some cases relocating the panel.

A related and more consequential noise is a contactor that hums or buzzes continuously while closed. This indicates either insufficient coil voltage to hold the armature firmly, or dirt, corrosion, or damage on the mating pole faces preventing full closure. A contactor in this condition is not making full contact pressure, which means elevated resistance and heat at the contacts, and it will fail.

A hum is therefore worth investigating rather than tolerating.

At 50 amps in three poles this suits substantial commercial three phase loads. Applications include commercial air conditioning and refrigeration with line voltage control.
