DiversiTech Definite Purpose Contactor C330A

The DiversiTech C330A is a three pole definite purpose contactor rated 30 amps with a 24 volt coil.

The three pole configuration switches all three legs of a three phase supply simultaneously. This is the standard arrangement for three phase motors and compressors, and switching all three legs together is not merely tidy: interrupting only some of the legs would leave a three phase motor single phasing, which is one of the more destructive faults a motor can experience.

Single phasing occurs when one leg of a three phase supply is lost while the others remain. The motor continues to run, but the current in the remaining two legs rises sharply as they attempt to carry the load. Without protection, the windings overheat and fail, often within minutes. This is why a blown fuse in one leg of a three phase circuit is a serious matter, and why lost phase protection is fitted to significant motors.

A three pole contactor with a pitted or burned contact on one pole can produce the same condition, which is why all three poles should be examined together and a contactor with one bad pole replaced entirely.

At 30 amps with a 24 volt coil this suits smaller three phase equipment. Applications include commercial air conditioning and refrigeration.
