DiversiTech Definite Purpose Contactor C240B

The DiversiTech C240B is a two pole definite purpose contactor rated 40 amps with a 120 volt coil.

Contactors in outdoor condensing units operate in a demanding environment, and their failure modes reflect it. The cabinet is ventilated to the outdoors, so the contactor is exposed to humidity, temperature extremes, airborne dust and salt in coastal locations, and to insects.

Insects deserve specific mention because the problem is widespread and frequently misdiagnosed. Ants in particular are attracted to the electromagnetic field of an energised coil and will colonise a contactor, packing the mechanism until the armature cannot move or shorting across the contacts. The symptom is a condensing unit that will not start with no obvious electrical fault, and the cause is visible only when the contactor is examined closely.

Corrosion is the slower problem. Pole faces and contact surfaces oxidise in humid conditions, particularly where the unit sits idle through a long off season, producing a contactor that buzzes or makes poor contact on the first calls of the season.

Both argue for inspecting the contactor at annual service rather than only when a fault is reported.
