DiversiTech Contactor 3P 30AM TMX330A2

The DiversiTech TMX330A2 is a three pole contactor rated 30 amps with a 24 volt coil.

Three phase compressors introduce a consideration absent from single phase equipment: rotation direction. A three phase motor rotates in a direction determined by the phase sequence of its supply, and reversing any two legs reverses the rotation.

For scroll compressors in particular this matters a great deal. A scroll compressor run backwards does not compress; it makes a distinctive loud noise, produces no pressure differential, and if left running will be damaged. Reverse rotation on a newly installed or newly wired three phase scroll compressor is a well known commissioning fault, and the remedy is simply to swap two of the three supply legs.

Because the contactor switches all three legs, rewiring it incorrectly during replacement is one of the ways rotation gets reversed. Marking the conductors before removing the old contactor, and confirming rotation and pressures at start-up, avoids the problem.

Reverse rotation should be checked on any three phase equipment after work on the supply side, including after utility work, since a phase swap upstream affects everything downstream.

At 30 amps in three poles this suits smaller three phase commercial equipment. Applications include commercial air conditioning and refrigeration.
