The DiversiTech TMX240A2 is a two pole contactor rated 40 amps with a 24 volt coil.

Voltage drop in the 24 volt control circuit is a recurring cause of contactor problems in residential systems, and it is worth understanding because the symptoms point elsewhere.

The thermostat circuit runs from the equipment to the thermostat and back, frequently through a long run of small gauge cable, and often through several safety devices in series. Each connection and each foot of conductor contributes resistance. Under the load of the contactor coil, particularly at the moment of inrush, the voltage available at the coil can be substantially less than the transformer's output.

A coil receiving marginal voltage may pull in slowly, chatter, or fail to pull in at all when the supply voltage is at the low end of its range. Because the fault depends on supply voltage and on the state of every connection in the circuit, it presents intermittently, typically in hot weather when the utility supply sags under load.

Measuring the voltage at the contactor coil while it is being energised, rather than at the transformer, is the diagnostic that finds it.

At 40 amps this suits larger residential and light commercial condensing units.
