DiversiTech Contactor 2P 40A 208/240V TMX240C2

The DiversiTech TMX240C2 is a two pole contactor rated 40 amps with a 208/240 volt coil.

The contactor's position in the control sequence determines what it can and cannot protect against, and this is worth being explicit about.

In a typical air conditioning circuit, the thermostat calls for cooling, that call passes through any safety devices wired in series, and the resulting signal energises the contactor coil. The contactor closes and the compressor and condenser fan run. Every protection in that chain acts by interrupting the coil circuit.

What this means practically is that a contactor with welded contacts defeats every one of those protections simultaneously. The thermostat can be satisfied, the high pressure switch can open, the condensate switch can trip, and the compressor continues to run because the contactor is no longer capable of opening. Welded contacts are therefore a more serious fault than they might appear, and a compressor that runs continuously regardless of controls should raise the possibility immediately.

Confirming that a contactor actually opens, not merely that it closes, is part of a proper service check.

At 40 amps in two poles with a line voltage coil this suits commercial refrigeration and light commercial air conditioning equipment.
