DiversiTech Contactor 2P 40A 120V TMX240B2

The DiversiTech TMX240B2 is a two pole contactor rated 40 amps with a 120 volt coil.

Contactor coils in humid environments face a slow degradation mechanism worth noting. Coil windings are insulated with a thin enamel, and the assembly is generally impregnated to exclude moisture. Over years in a damp location, particularly outdoors or in an unconditioned mechanical space, moisture penetrates that protection and the insulation resistance between turns falls.

The result is a coil that eventually shorts between turns. A partially shorted coil draws more current than it should, runs hot, and may still pull the armature in, so the fault is not immediately obvious. It progresses to complete failure, and in doing so can draw enough current to damage the control transformer or the control board that feeds it.

A coil that runs noticeably hot, or a control transformer that has failed without obvious cause, is worth investigating with this in mind. Coil resistance measured and compared against specification will identify a shorted coil.

Equipment in coastal or high humidity locations is most affected, and inspection of coils at annual service is worthwhile there.

At 40 amps with a 120 volt coil this suits line voltage controlled light commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
