DiversiTech Contactor 1P 30A 120V TMX130B2

The DiversiTech TMX130B2 is a single pole contactor rated 30 amps with a 120 volt coil.

Coil inrush is a characteristic worth understanding when a control circuit is marginal. A contactor coil draws substantially more current at the instant it is energised, while the armature is still open, than it does once the armature has closed. The magnetic circuit is incomplete with an air gap present, so the coil's impedance is lower and the inrush current correspondingly higher, often several times the sealed current.

This matters where several contactors are energised simultaneously from one transformer, or where a control transformer is sized close to its limit. The combined inrush can drop the control voltage far enough that no contactor pulls in fully, producing chattering across the panel. The symptom appears intermittent and load dependent, which makes it awkward to diagnose.

Control transformers should be sized on the sum of the inrush VA of everything they energise, not the sealed VA. Where an existing transformer is marginal, adding a load can push it over.

Measuring control voltage at the moment of energisation, rather than at rest, reveals the problem.

At 30 amps with a 120 volt coil this suits line voltage controlled equipment in light commercial HVAC and refrigeration.
