Socket-head cap screws are frequently recessed. A counterbore is machined so the screw head sits flush or below the surface — which is why they are used, since a protruding head fouls things. That recess is exactly what stops a standard bit socket working: the socket body bottoms out against the surrounding metal before the hex bit is fully seated in the screw.

A partially engaged hex bit under torque rounds the screw's socket. And a rounded internal hex, in a screw sunk in a counterbore, is very hard to recover — there is nothing left to grip, no room for an extractor, and drilling it out means drilling down a hole.

Long bit sockets reach the bottom of a deep counterbore.

The trade is stiffness. A long bit twists more under torque and gives less feel, which is why standard-length sockets exist for accessible fasteners.
