Product Highlights
Description
The Empire EPLE250 is a combination square in a 12 inch adjustable size, supplied 1 per pack. It replaces model 230.
A combination square earns its name honestly — it is several tools sharing one blade. The head slides along the rule and locks anywhere, which gives a 90 degree square for marking and checking, a 45 degree face for mitres, an adjustable depth and height gauge, a marking gauge for scribing a line parallel to an edge, and a straightedge. Most heads also carry a small spirit level and a scriber.
The sliding head is what separates it from a fixed try square, and the capability that follows is worth understanding. Setting the head at a chosen distance turns the tool into a marking gauge: run the head along the workpiece edge and the blade end scribes a parallel line at exactly that offset, repeatably, along the whole length. That single function is why a combination square lives in a bag when a fixed square would do for checking corners.
At 12 inches the blade covers the range most bench and site work presents.
The accuracy of the tool depends on the head locking square and staying square. A dropped combination square should be checked before it is trusted.
Applications include layout and marking, mitre work, depth setting, machining, fabrication, and general carpentry.
Users include carpenters, joiners, machinists, fabricators, and maintenance trades.
