A crowfoot set is bought for a specific frustration, and it is worth naming it.

A fitting in the middle of a tube run cannot be reached with a socket — a socket is a cup and it needs a free end to slide over. It frequently cannot be reached with a wrench either, because the surrounding pipework leaves no room to swing one. Hydraulic manifolds, brake and fuel lines, instrument tubing, and air systems are full of these.

A crowfoot is an open wrench head on a square drive. It goes onto the fitting from the side, and the torque comes from an extension and a ratchet approaching from wherever there is room. That is the only way to reach a great many fittings.

The rule that must accompany every crowfoot: on a torque wrench, it changes the torque. A crowfoot mounted in line adds its length to the wrench's effective lever arm, and the fastener receives more than the setting. Mount it at ninety degrees to the handle, or apply the manufacturer's correction.
