Product Highlights
Description
The Williams SNPWS-483 is an adjustable face spanner wrench set, 3 pieces.
The distinction between a face spanner and the pin spanner in this range is worth being explicit about, because the names sound interchangeable and the tools are not.
A pin spanner engages a hole drilled into the side of a round nut — the pin goes in radially, from the outside.
A face spanner engages holes drilled into the front face of the nut — the pins go in axially, parallel to the shaft. That is a different geometry entirely, and it is what a great many bearing lock nuts, spindle nuts, and machine collars actually use, because a face hole is easier to machine and does not weaken the outer wall.
Buying the wrong one means a tool that physically cannot engage the fastener. They are not substitutes for each other and a shop doing machinery work generally needs both.
Adjustable means the pin spacing can be set to the fastener's hole circle, which is what lets three wrenches cover a useful range instead of needing one per size.
The rule for both types: the pins carry all the torque in two small holes. Steady pressure, never shock, and set the spacing precisely — a pin rocking in a hole rounds it out, and a rounded drive hole leaves no way to turn the nut at all.
