Williams SNPWS-14-19RC Socket Set 1/2 Inch Black Industrial Impact 19 6 Point

The Williams SNPWS-14-19RC is a socket set, 1/2 inch drive, impact, 6 point, black industrial, 19 pieces.

This is the set specification worth reading carefully: impact, 6 point, black. Every one of those is deliberate and together they define what the set is for.

Impact and black industrial mean the same thing — chrome-moly steel, heat treated for toughness rather than hardness, with thick walls. That is what survives an impact gun's thousands of hammer blows a minute. Chrome sockets in the same situation shatter, and Williams' own warranty states plainly that using chrome-finish sockets on power drive equipment is a misuse of the tool that can result in serious injury.

Six point is the other correct choice and it follows from the first. Impact work is high-torque work on fasteners that are frequently seized. A 6-point socket bears on the flats; a 12-point contacts nearer the corners, and corners round. Under a gun, a 12-point socket on a rusted nut strips it.

So a 19 piece 1/2 inch impact set in 6-point is the sensible core of an impact kit — the drive size that covers automotive and equipment work, in the socket shape that will not destroy what it turns.

The trade against chrome is wall thickness: impact sockets fit fewer tight recesses.
