A set-up wedge is a fitter's and ironworker's tool and its job is alignment.

Structural steel does not arrive perfectly aligned. Two pieces are craned into position, and the bolt holes are close to lined up but not quite — a fraction of an inch out, which is enough that no bolt will pass. The connection cannot be completed and the crane is waiting.

A drift pin is one answer: driven into the hole, its taper pulls the plates into register. A wedge is the other. Driven between members, it forces separation, closes a gap, or levers a piece into position while the fitter gets a bolt started.

Both work by mechanical advantage from a shallow taper, which is why a hammer and a wedge can move steel that is hanging on a crane.

The safety note that belongs on any struck tool: a wedge is hardened, a hammer is hardened, and hardened steel striking hardened steel chips. That chip travels. Eye protection is not optional on this work, and a mushroomed wedge head is shedding fragments with every blow — dress it or scrap it.
