Product Highlights
Description
The Williams SNPTS51827 is a socket, salvage and damaged fastener type, 1/2 inch drive, 21 mm, 1-21/32 inch overall length, black industrial, drive end diameter 1-3/16 inch, working end diameter 1-3/16 inch.
Note a gap: the 15 mm salvage socket in this range lists a broach depth and this one does not. Broach depth is how far the gripping flutes extend into the socket, which determines how much of a damaged fastener it can engage. That is a meaningful specification on an extractor. Obtain it.
The technique for a salvage socket is worth stating, because used wrongly it fails and people conclude the tool does not work.
It is driven on, not slipped on. The socket is hammered squarely onto the damaged fastener until the flutes have bitten into the remaining metal — that hammering is the tool engaging, and it is why these are impact-rated black rather than chrome. A salvage socket placed by hand and turned will spin.
Then it is turned steadily rather than shocked. The spiral flutes tighten as they turn, and the grip builds.
And it comes off with a punch through the drive end, which is what the through-hole is for. A salvage socket that has done its job is frequently stuck on the fastener it removed.
The result is destructive. The fastener is scrap, which was already true.
Applications include rusted assemblies and rounded fasteners.
