Product Highlights
Description
The Williams SNPTS51591 is a socket, salvage and damaged fastener type, 1/2 inch drive, 15 mm, 1-21/32 inch overall length, black industrial, drive end diameter 29/32 inch, working end diameter 29/32 inch, broach depth 1/2 inch.
A salvage socket is an extractor and it exists for the fastener that has already gone wrong.
The situation is universal: a nut that has been rounded — by an adjustable wrench, by a 12-point socket, by the wrong size, or by fifteen years of corrosion. The flats are gone. There is nothing for a normal socket to grip, and the fastener is holding something that has to come apart.
A salvage socket's bore is not a hexagon. It is a spiral flute, tapering, cut so that turning it drives the flutes into whatever remains of the fastener. The harder it turns, the deeper it bites. It is hammered onto the rounded nut and then turned, and it grips metal that has no flats left at all.
The trade is that it is destructive. The fastener comes out and it is scrap, and the socket is deforming metal rather than turning it.
The black industrial finish is the identification — this is impact-rated chrome-moly, which it must be, because salvage work involves hammering.
Note the size is 15 mm: extractors are sized to the original fastener, not to the rounded remains.
Applications include automotive, machinery, and rusted assemblies.
