Product Highlights
Description
The Williams SNPST-826 is a socket, shallow, 1/2 inch drive, 13/16 inch, 1-5/8 inch overall length, high-polished chrome, 8 point, drive end diameter 1-7/16 inch.
Note a malformed value in the source: the working end diameter reads 17/16 inch, which is not a fraction anybody uses. It should almost certainly be 1-7/16. Correct it — a malformed fraction breaks numeric sorting and looks like carelessness.
The 8-point shape is the real specification here and it is genuinely uncommon.
Six-point and twelve-point sockets both fit hexagonal fasteners. An 8-point socket fits square ones — four flats, engaged in eight positions.
Square fasteners are old and they have not gone away. Square-head bolts and set screws are all over older machinery, agricultural equipment, and structural ironwork. Square pipe plugs are standard on gearboxes, hydraulic reservoirs, engine blocks, and tanks — every drain plug and fill plug on a great deal of industrial equipment is a square. And a 12-point socket on a square plug contacts at four corners and rounds it, which on a cast iron gearbox plug is an expensive afternoon.
So an 8-point socket is a maintenance necessity rather than a curiosity, and most people discover they need one at the worst moment.
Chrome is a hand tool. It must not go on an impact gun.
