Hook blades are a distinct geometry and they exist for a specific and rather important reason.

A straight blade cuts by being pushed through material, which means the operator's force is directed along the cut — and when the material gives way, the blade keeps going in that direction. Toward whatever is beyond it, which is frequently a hand. Straight utility blades cause a very large share of hand lacerations for exactly this reason.

A hook blade cuts on the pull, and the cutting edge is on the inside of the hook — facing back toward the operator's own tool, enclosed. The blade engages the material by hooking under it, and it cannot skate off the surface and travel.

Which is why hook blades are standard for roofing felt, carpet, vinyl, shrink wrap, strapping, and anything laid flat over a surface that must not be scored.
