The length of centers figure — 1-15/32 inch — is the specification that matters most, and almost nobody uses it correctly.

It is the distance from the drive square to the centre of the fastener. On an ordinary tool that is a curiosity. On a torque wrench it is the number that determines whether the torque is right.

A torque wrench is calibrated for force at a specific distance. A crowfoot mounted in line with the handle adds its length of centers to that distance, which means the fastener receives more torque than the dial says. On a 15 inch wrench, adding 1-15/32 inch means roughly ten percent more than the setting. That is enough to matter on a hydraulic fitting and enough to strip a soft one.

The two correct approaches: mount the crowfoot at ninety degrees to the wrench handle, which leaves the effective length unchanged, or reduce the setting proportionally.

The head depth of 11/32 inch is the other useful number — it is how thin the tool is, which determines whether it fits a fitting sunk in a recess.

The whole point of a crowfoot is a fitting mid-run where nothing else reaches.
