Product Highlights
Description
The Williams SNPSA-16A is a socket bit, 1/2 inch drive, 1/2 inch hex bit, socket outside diameter 31/32 inch, 2-1/4 inch overall length, high-polish chrome, socket length 1-1/2 inch, standard depth.
A 1/2 inch hex is a large internal drive and it is worth noting what that implies about the fastener.
Socket-head cap screws with a 1/2 inch hex are substantial — the bolt itself is considerably larger than the hex, and it is carrying real load. Machinery mounts, hydraulic manifolds, structural connections, and press tooling all use them, and they are torqued accordingly.
Which is exactly where an L-key fails. An L-shaped hex key on a fastener this size cannot generate the torque without twisting, and a twisting key rounds the socket. A rounded 1/2 inch hex in a recessed cap screw is a serious problem — there is nothing to grip, no room for an extractor, and the screw is usually holding something that cannot be moved out of the way.
A hex bit socket puts the same hex on a proper 1/2 inch square drive, where a breaker bar or a torque wrench can do the work.
Note the chrome finish: this is a hand tool. Williams' own warranty states that chrome-finish tools on power drive equipment is a misuse that can result in serious injury. Chrome is hardened for wear, and hardened means brittle — it shatters under an impact gun.
