Williams SNPSA-10A Socket Bit 1/2 Inch High-Polish Chrome 5/16 Inch Hex

The Williams SNPSA-10A is a socket bit, 1/2 inch drive, 5/16 inch hex bit, socket outside diameter 29/32 inch, 2-1/4 inch overall length, high-polish chrome, socket length 1-1/2 inch, standard depth.

Standard depth is the specification and it is worth reading against the long version in this range, because the two are chosen by the fastener rather than by preference.

A hex bit socket drives a socket-head cap screw, and cap screws are frequently recessed into counterbores. If the counterbore is deep, a standard bit socket bottoms out against the surrounding metal before the hex is fully into the screw — and a partially engaged hex bit under torque rounds the socket in the screw head. That failure is difficult to recover from, because a rounded internal hex in a recessed screw has nothing left to grip and no room to drill.

So a deep counterbore needs the long version, and a surface-mounted or shallow one is better served by the standard: shorter is stiffer, and a stiff bit transmits torque instead of twisting.

At 2-1/4 inches overall this is compact.

Note the chrome finish. This is a hand tool. Chrome bit sockets are hardened for wear and correspondingly brittle, and Williams' own warranty states that chrome tools on power drive equipment is a misuse that can cause serious injury.
