Note that the source states no finish. That matters more than it looks: this range carries both chrome extensions and impact extensions, and they are not interchangeable. A chrome extension on an impact gun is hardened steel taking thousands of hammer blows a minute, and it snaps — Williams' own warranty states that using chrome-finish tools on power drive equipment is a misuse that can cause serious injury. What an extension buys is reach past an obstruction. What it costs is feel and torsional stiffness. An extension is a steel bar transmitting torque, and under load it twists — elastically, a little, and more the longer it is. The operator's hand feels the wrench move before the fastener does, which makes a delicate job harder to judge.

It also costs alignment. A socket on an extension can be run at a slight angle to the fastener without anyone noticing, and a socket that is not square on a nut rounds it.

Five inches is the length that clears most obstructions without losing much of either.
