Product Highlights
Description
The Williams SNPPL-47C is a diagonal cutting plier, 7 inch overall length, double-dipped plastic handle, 11/16 inch blade length.
Diagonal cutters shear, and understanding that explains what they are and are not for.
The two blades pass close to each other and cut by wedging the material apart until it fails — closer to a chisel action than a scissor action. That produces a clean cut on wire and it puts enormous stress on a small area of the blade edge. The edges are hardened accordingly, and hardened means brittle.
Which sets the limit. Diagonal cutters cut soft wire: copper, aluminium, soft steel, cable ties, and the like. Put them on hardened material — a spring, a piano wire, a hardened fastener, a nail — and the material does not yield. The blade does. It chips, and the plier is finished.
That is the most common way good cutters get destroyed, and the person doing it is usually surprised, because the tool feels strong enough.
The 11/16 inch blade length is the working edge.
Double-dipped handles are a comfort grip and not an insulation rating. This is not an insulated tool and it must not be used on live work — insulated tools are individually proof-tested and marked, and a dipped handle is neither.
