The Williams SNPJHW40253 is a 2-1/4 inch inspection mirror, telescoping from 6-1/2 inch to 36-3/8 inch.

An inspection mirror is a diagnostic instrument and the telescoping range is what makes it one.

The problem it solves is that most of the things that need looking at are behind something. A leak on the back of an engine, a cracked bracket inside a frame rail, a fastener at the rear of a housing, a part number on the underside of a component — all of them are visible only to a mirror, and getting the mirror to the place is the whole difficulty.

At 6-1/2 inches collapsed this fits a pocket. At 36-3/8 extended it reaches down a bay, along a chassis, or into a machine. That range is why it telescopes rather than being made in three lengths.

The 2-1/4 inch head is a working compromise: large enough to show a useful field, small enough to fit through a gap. Bigger mirrors see more and go fewer places.

Two practical notes. A mirror needs light — a mirror in a dark cavity shows a dark cavity, so it is a two-tool job with a torch. And the image is reversed, which takes a moment to accommodate when the hand has to follow what the eye sees.
