A feeler gauge measures a gap by filling it, which is a beautifully direct method and one that depends entirely on technique.

The blade is inserted into the clearance and the operator reads the fit by feel. The correct feel is a slight drag — the blade moves with light resistance. A blade that slides freely means the gap is larger than the blade. A blade that will not enter means it is smaller. Between those, the drag is the measurement, and it is a genuinely learnable skill rather than a knack.

The mistake is force. Pushing a blade into a gap it does not fit bends the blade permanently, and a bent feeler gauge reads wrong forever afterward without looking any different.
