Product Highlights
Description
The Williams SNP7M-670 is a socket, shallow impact, 1 inch drive, 70 mm, 3-7/8 inch overall length, black industrial, 6 point, drive end diameter 2-3/8 inch, working end diameter 3-3/4 inch.
The wall thickness is the specification hiding in these numbers, and it is worth doing the arithmetic.
Seventy millimetres is about 2-3/4 inches across the flats. The working end diameter is 3-3/4 inches. That means roughly half an inch of steel wall around the fastener — and that thickness is the reason impact sockets look chunky compared to chrome ones.
It is not styling. An impact socket has to survive thousands of shock loadings a minute without cracking, and the wall is what carries it. A chrome socket's thin wall is possible because hand torque is applied smoothly; under a hammering gun the same wall cracks.
Thin walls are also why chrome sockets are the ones that fit into tight recesses, and why an impact socket sometimes will not go where a chrome one does. That is a real trade, and it is not a reason to reach for the chrome one — Williams' own warranty states that chrome sockets on power drive equipment is a misuse that can cause serious injury.
Six-point on a fastener this size is correct: the flats take the torque where corners would round.
Applications include heavy equipment and plant maintenance.
