Pull is the specification and it distinguishes this from every other hydraulic cylinder, which push.

A standard ram extends. That covers most of what hydraulics do — lifting, spreading, pressing, straightening. A pull cylinder retracts under pressure, which is a genuinely different capability, and the applications that need it cannot be done any other way: drawing a bearing off a shaft, pulling a bushing, straightening a dented panel or a frame rail by pulling it back rather than pushing from inside, and tensioning.

Body shops and machinery maintenance are the two obvious markets. A pulled dent and a pushed dent are not the same repair, and a bearing that has to come toward you cannot be pushed.

At 5 tons this is a modest capacity — appropriate, because pulling arrangements are limited by what the anchor and the attachment can take rather than by the cylinder.

The hydraulic caution belongs here as it does on the whole category: portable hydraulic tooling runs at around 10,000 psi, and a pinhole leak at that pressure injects fluid through skin. Never find a leak with a hand. Use cardboard, and treat any injection injury as a surgical emergency.
