The Williams SNP4-140B is a 1/2 inch drive impact universal joint.

A universal joint lets a socket sit at an angle to the drive, which is the only way to reach a great many fasteners — anything behind a bracket, under a manifold, or at the back of an assembly where a straight run is impossible.

Two things about them are worth knowing.

The first is that an impact-rated U-joint is not the same tool as a chrome one. A U-joint is a linkage with pins in it, and under an impact gun's hammering those pins take the full shock thousands of times a minute. A chrome hand U-joint fails there, and Williams' own warranty is explicit that chrome tools on power drive equipment is a misuse that can cause serious injury.

The second is that a U-joint costs torque. The greater the angle, the more of the gun's output goes into the joint rather than the fastener, and the joint gets hot. Keep the angle as small as the job allows.

A U-joint also whips at speed if it is not supported. Guide it with a hand on the socket end.
