Impact is the specification and it applies to extensions exactly as it applies to sockets, which is the part people miss.

Almost everyone knows that chrome sockets must not go on an impact gun. Far fewer apply the same rule to what is between the gun and the socket. A chrome extension on an impact wrench is the same failure: hardened steel, brittle, taking thousands of hammer blows a minute, and it snaps. When it snaps it does so at speed with a socket and a fastener's worth of energy behind it.

An impact extension is chrome-moly, heat treated for toughness, and dimensioned to survive the shock. It looks like an extension and it is a different tool.

The 5 inch length is the general working length: enough to clear a wing, a bracket, or a recess, short enough that torsional wind-up is not eating the gun's output. Every inch of extension is a torsional spring, and a long extension absorbs hammer blows that were meant for the fastener. Impact guns lose real output through long extensions.
