Williams SNP38236 Socket Bit 3/4 Inch Industrial Black One Piece Impact Hex

The Williams SNP38236 is a socket bit, 3/4 inch drive, 1-1/8 inch hex bit, 3-1/2 inch overall length, industrial black, one piece impact, drive end diameter 1-3/4 inch.

A 1-1/8 inch hex is a very large internal drive, and it places this tool squarely in heavy equipment: hydraulic fittings, large socket-head fasteners, plant machinery, and mining gear.

At that size the one-piece construction stops being a nicety. A two-piece bit socket — a hex bit pressed into a socket body — has a joint, and the torque going through a 1-1/8 inch hex under an impact gun is enormous. That joint is where it fails: the bit spins, or the retaining pin shears, and the tool is scrap. A one-piece forging has nothing to come apart.

The 3-1/2 inch overall length is short deliberately. An extension or a long bit is a torsional spring, and under impact a spring absorbs the hammer blows that were supposed to reach the fastener. Short tools transmit; long tools damp.

The black industrial finish is the identification system. Black means impact-rated chrome-moly, heat treated for toughness so it deforms rather than shattering. Chrome means a hand tool — hardened for wear, brittle, and dangerous on an impact gun. Williams' own warranty calls chrome-on-impact a misuse that can cause serious injury.
