A 12-point impact socket is an unusual combination and it deserves an honest explanation, because 6-point is the default in impact for a reason.

Impact work is high-torque work. A 12-point socket contacts the fastener nearer the corners, and corners are what round off. Under an impact gun's hammering on a seized fastener, a 12-point socket is the one that strips it — which is why impact sets are normally 6-point.

What 12-point buys is engagement every thirty degrees instead of sixty. On an impact gun that does not help with swing, since the gun does not need to be repositioned. Where it helps is getting the socket onto the fastener at all: a 12-point drops on in half the rotation, which in a blind or awkward position is the difference between working and fumbling.
