What a punch and chisel holder does is remove a hand from the strike zone, and the injury it prevents is one of the most common in the trades.

Striking a punch or a cold chisel means one hand holding the tool and the other swinging a hammer at it, and the two are a few inches apart. A miss lands on fingers. This happens constantly — not to careless people, but to anyone working at an awkward angle, in poor light, on a cold morning, or overhead where the hammer's path is not quite where the eye thinks it is.

A holder grips the punch or chisel and puts a handle between the tool and the hand. The hand moves away from the point of impact, and a missed blow hits the holder rather than knuckles.

It also improves the work. A hand-held chisel moves under each blow; a holder keeps it aligned, which means the chisel cuts where it was aimed.
