The serrated jaw is what makes this a pipe tool rather than a wrench, and the distinction is fundamental.

A wrench turns a fastener with flats. A pipe has no flats — it is round, and round is exactly what a wrench cannot grip. So a pipe tool has to bite instead: hardened serrated teeth that dig into the pipe's surface and key into it mechanically.

That is why the classic pipe wrench design works the way it does. The jaw is deliberately loose, and the geometry is such that turning force pulls the jaws tighter into the pipe — the harder you pull, the harder it bites. It is elegant and it is entirely dependent on the teeth marking the pipe.

Which is the consequence worth stating: a pipe wrench damages what it grips. It leaves teeth marks, and on plated, polished, or thin-wall material those marks are a defect. Nothing chromed, nothing finished, and nothing that will be visible should meet serrated jaws — a strap wrench or a smooth-jaw tool is the answer there.

At 8-7/16 inches with a 1/8 to 3/4 inch capacity, this is a small-pipe tool.
