The movable jaw rides on a worm screw. That screw and its slot are the only things holding the jaw in position, and they are dramatically weaker than the fixed jaw cast into the head. A 12 inch handle applies serious torque, and if that torque is going the wrong way — pushing against the movable jaw — it goes through the screw. The jaw opens under load, the wrench slips, and the fastener is rounded.

So the rule that is a suggestion on a small wrench becomes structural here: pull toward the movable jaw. Every time. It is why the jaw is on the side it is on.
