Victor VCT0331-0013 Cutting Tip 101 0 Copper Acetylene 1/2 Inch

The Victor VCT0331-0013 is a 101 cutting tip, size 0, acetylene, copper, 1/2 inch cutting capacity.

At 1/2 inch this is the most commonly used capacity in fabrication, and it is a good place to state the thing that determines cut quality more than any tip choice: the preheat flame setting.

An oxy-fuel flame has three settings and they are visibly different. A carburising flame has excess acetylene — a feathery white plume around the inner cone. A neutral flame has the fuel and oxygen balanced, and the inner cone is sharp and defined. An oxidising flame has excess oxygen, and the cone is short, pointed, and it hisses.

Cutting uses a neutral flame, and the reason is that the preheat's job is to bring the steel to ignition temperature without changing its chemistry. A carburising flame adds carbon to the surface. An oxidising flame burns metal prematurely and produces a rough kerf.

Setting it is done by eye: run the flame carburising, then add oxygen until the feather just disappears into the cone. That is neutral, and it is a skill worth ten tip changes.

Copper is the material in this series; brass is the other.
