The Victor VCT0330-0007 is a 101 cutting tip, size 4, acetylene, brass, 3 inch cutting capacity.

At 3 inches this is the heavy end of hand cutting, and thick plate is where technique stops being optional.

Two things govern it. The preheat has to establish properly at the edge before the oxygen lever is pulled — on three inch plate that takes real time, and pulling the lever early produces a cut that does not start, blows molten metal back at the operator, and wastes the edge. And the travel speed has to match the burn: too fast and the cut does not penetrate, so the bottom half is not cut at all; too slow and the kerf widens and the plate takes enormous heat.

Heat is the other consequence of thick cutting. Three inch plate absorbs a great deal, and it stays dangerous long after it stops glowing. Hot steel looks like cold steel.

The oxygen pressure is also considerably higher than on thin work, and the tip's centre orifice is sized for it. Running a size 4 tip at thin-plate pressures produces a cut that will not sever.

Acetylene's rule is absolute regardless of tip size: never above 15 psi. The gas decomposes explosively above that, with no oxygen involved.
